7 Ways to Protect Your Skin This Summer, According to a Local Dermatology Expert
We caught up with board-certified Physician Assistant Ali Grean, PA-C, from Laguna Dermatology to talk about smart, simple ways to keep your skin protected during the sunniest months of the year. With over a decade of experience in both medical and cosmetic dermatology — and a reputation for personalized, natural-looking care — Ali shared her top dermatologist-approved tips to help keep your skin healthy, glowing, and sun-safe all summer long.
1) Wear Mineral SPF
Opt for a mineral-based sunscreen over chemical options, as they provide better protection and are less irritating. Apply SPF every two hours, especially if you're outdoors. A powder SPF is a great midday touch-up option when you're on the go!
2) Try Heliocare
This oral supplement contains powerful antioxidants that help defend your skin against sun-induced damage from the inside out. It’s a great addition to your sun protection routine but should never replace SPF!
3) Use Antioxidants
Topical antioxidants help neutralize free radicals and repair sun damage. Two of my favorites are SkinBetter Alto Defense and Alastin Vitamin C+ Radical Defense for a glowing, youthful complexion.
4) Schedule a Yearly Skin Check
Keep an eye on changing moles and book a skin exam once a year with your dermatologist. Pro tip: Schedule it around your birthday so you never forget!
5) Wear UPF Protective Clothing
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) clothing provides an extra layer of defense against harmful rays. Look for stylish rash guards, wide-brim hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.
6) Consider Laser Treatments
Treatments like BBL and Moxi can fade sun damage, improve skin tone, and even help prevent precancerous lesions from developing into skin cancer.
7) Use Tretinoin
This powerful prescription retinoid promotes cell turnover, stimulates collagen, and helps eliminate precancerous cells before they become problematic. Protecting your skin now means fewer wrinkles, fewer sunspots, and a lower risk of skin cancer later! Follow these steps to keep your skin glowing all summer long.
