Laguna Through a Local’s Eye: Donna McNutt

Donna McNutt, the Cancer Fashionista

When she was diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma in 2015 Donna McNutt was determined not to let it bring her down. In fact, while in the hospital she became known for swapping her hospital gown for fun PJs and slippers and brought all sorts of color to the chemo ward.

Always a fashionista, she continued to play dress up throughout her treatment rather than sulk at home in her grubbies. Today, she is known on Instagram as the The Cancer Fashionista, and her message to others is to find the thing that makes you feel whole — and then use that to fuel positivity through the darkest of moments.

Whether it’s Gucci sneakers or a new bag from a local Laguna boutique, McNutt is using her fashion sense to make a statement — one that boldly states that nothing will bring her down.

She lives by the quote from Israeli fashion designer, Alber Elbaz:

"Style is the only thing you can't buy. It's not in a shopping bag, a label, or a price tag. It's something reflected from our soul to the outside world — an emotion."

Indeed, McNutt battles cancer and life’s trials by showing her soul instead of her scars... one outfit at a time.

Fashionable cancer survivor, Donna McNutt

Oak

Oak is our version of Cheers, where everyone really does know your name and makes you feel like you're a part of the family. Chef Chris Mahler has created a great menu that everyone will love.

The Wine Gallery

Satisfying my Italian genes, the Wine Gallery is where we go for the best pizza in town. (I’m craving their spaghetti and meatballs just thinking about it!) With great outdoor seating and wonderful staff it’s definitely a place to sit and hang out… but they also have a great take out menu as well!

Brass Tack

Brass Tack is a wonderfully curated shop of American made, fair trade merchandise from around the world and unique vintage finds. If I'm downtown, this is always my first stop. Owner Melissa Kanarek and her staff make every visit a fun one and I've made some of my very favorite purchases for myself and others here.

Laguna Supply

"We hope you feel beautiful" is sometimes written across their window and it’s true in every purchase I've made at Laguna Supply. Owner Laura Hart has such a great eye for current fashion and I never walk out of this boutique without a bag.

The Garage Collective

Kristin Miracle-Lewis has brought together an amazing group of artists to form The Garage Collective! Set up in an adorable cottage retail location, I often go here just to be inspired by the home goods, rugs, jewelry, and so much more. Check out their Instagram too!

Areo

I always head to Areo when I need an eclectic gift that will be perfectly wrapped. They have a great selection of greeting cards and home design that always finds a way into my home.

Laguna Nails and Spa

Not only do I look forward to getting my nails done at Laguna Nails and Spa, but I also relish in the warmth and courtesy of the family who runs it.

Bushard’s Pharmacy & Apothecary

I always plan for some extra time when I go to Bushard’s Pharmacy & Apothecary to pick up a prescription (which can also be delivered) because I love to browse their aisles, check out their amazing makeup counter, and spend time chatting with their friendly staff.

Laguna Coffee

Laguna Coffee is my husband's home away from home. He just can't start his day without his Laguna Coffee and posse. This is precisely why we live in Laguna Beach.
